2025 content planning & using awareness days for good

A new year is here, and with it comes the chance to start fresh and plan ahead. A content calendar can be a really useful resource and keep us organised and proactive in content creation throughout the year. And no content calendar is complete without awareness days.

Awareness days have always been a powerful way to spotlight important causes, unite people, and drive meaningful change. While the rise of fun or quirky days (hello, National Odd Sock Day!) has added a playful twist, it also reminds us of the importance of staying authentic. When brands align their values with the causes they support, awareness days can still create real impact and inspire action that truly matters.

In 2025, we want to return the power to purpose-driven organisations, charities and not-for-profits - who can hugely benefit from awareness days in boosting reach, engagement and funding for their causes. So, we created 'The Social for Good 2025 awareness dates calendar', a handy resource full of dates that are driven by positive impact.

Why your brand should take part in awareness days 💗

Awareness days provide a brilliant platform for organisations to show their support for causes that matter. Or, in a charity's case, create momentum around funding collectively. When done right, taking part can:

  • Amplify your values: Share your stance on issues close to your mission.

  • Inspire action: Encourage your audience to donate, volunteer, or get involved.

  • Build connections: Join in larger national or global conversations and show you’re part of something bigger.

Take International Women's Day, for example; celebrating and advocating for gender equality directly supports organisations championing women's rights. Similarly, World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to raise awareness, share resources, and demonstrate your organisation’s commitment to mental wellbeing.

When to take part and when not to  🚩

It’s important to be thoughtful about the awareness days you choose to support. We've mentioned why above! Here are a few things to keep in mind before taking part:

  • Be authentic: Stick to days that genuinely align with your mission and values. Jumping on trends for the sake of it can feel disconnected or insincere.

  • Add value: Don't waste an opportunity to drive impact for a good cause. Create content that inspires action and encourages audiences to get involved.

  • Understand the cause: Take time to learn about the day’s history and purpose. Misusing or misunderstanding an awareness day can do more harm than good.

For example, if your organisation isn’t connected to environmental issues, participating in World Environment Day might not feel authentic. Or, worst-case scenario, you might get called out for not 'practising what you preach'. On the other hand, for brands committed to sustainability and transparent about their efforts, it’s a fantastic opportunity to inspire others to make more sustainable choices in their own lives.

Ask yourself, does our organisation have a relevant standpoint on this issue? If you can confidently answer “yes,” then go ahead, get involved and do good!

Making content count 👍

Once you’ve chosen the right awareness days, here’s how to make the most of them:

  • Use hashtags wisely: We know they're on the decline, but LinkedIn is still using hashtags for awareness day discoverability, so make sure you're using the right one. Dates supported by organisations will specify official hashtags. For instance, the organisers of World Cancer Day recommend using #WorldCancerDay to unify global conversations.

  • Tag the right organisations: Acknowledge and support the charities or causes linked to the day. We've included links for you within our awareness dates calendar to save you the research time.

For instance, on Time to Talk Day (6th February), you could create a post encouraging open conversations about mental health and tag Mind (who started this awareness day) to help amplify their message and resources.

Plan ahead to stay ahead 🎯

Getting organised early makes all the difference. We hope our Social for Good awareness dates calendar can help you take the first step and identify what awareness day to take part in. We recommend planning at least a month in advance to give yourself and any collaborators enough time to create as impactful a piece of content as possible. Some tasks and considerations might include:

  • Purpose and promise: Ensuring that content has relevance and purpose and drives positive change.

  • Format and design: How you choose to engage your audience is important. What format, graphic, video or message will grab their attention best?

  • Amplification and advocacy: To reach more people, could you collaborate with advocates, influencers, or aligned brands who share a similar audience to yours?

  • Call to action: Ensure you're empowering your audience to do something themselves. Donate, volunteer, take part or give them something to share with others. It's all for the greater good of course, but people want to feel they've made a difference themselves. Make them a hero too.

Creative ways to join in 👀

Need some ideas on how to get involved in awareness days as a business? Here are a few from the Social for Good team:

  • Celebrate diversity and inclusion: During Pride Month (June), share a post highlighting local Pride events and link to charities supporting this space.

  • Showcase creativity: On World Art Day (15th April 2025), host a virtual art competition and highlight the positive impact creativity has on mental health.

  • Start a kindness campaign: On Random Acts of Kindness Day (17th February 2025), share a list of ideas for readers to offer small, thoughtful acts of kindness throughout the day.

  • Advocate for inclusion: During Neurodiversity Celebration Week (17th-23rd March 2025), highlight stories from your team or community about the value of diverse thinking.

  • Raise awareness about food waste: For Stop Food Waste Day (24th April 2025), share tips on reducing food waste at home or work and spotlight brands tackling this issue.

  • Collaborate with a charity: On Small Charities Day (19th September 2025), shine a spotlight on a local organisation, share their story, and encourage your audience to support their work through donations or volunteering.

It's all about balance ⚖️

Awareness days are more than just dates on a calendar - they’re a chance to do good and be a part of something bigger. By focusing on awareness days that truly align with your values and mission, you can create genuine connections and make a meaningful impact. It’s about finding the ones that feel right for your organisation and showcasing the causes you care about most.

But not every day needs to be tied to an event. Balance is key. Combine awareness day and more topical content with evergreen content that tells your story and keeps your mission alive all year round. These messages help your audience see the bigger picture of your organisation’s purpose and build deeper connections.
