How we helped Medical Research Foundation maximise their Google Ad Grant account

The backstory

The Medical Research Foundation funds vital health research in areas that are often overlooked or underfunded, from antimicrobial resistance to adolescent mental health.

By backing the brightest researchers in the UK, they’re investing in the future of medical science and improving lives.

Although they had access to Google’s $10,000/month Ad Grant, much of it was going unused.

Their team needed expert support to maximise the grant and ensure their campaigns were set up for sustained, meaningful growth.

That’s where we came in.

How it went down

Our approach

We started with a comprehensive audit of the account to understand what was working, what wasn’t, and what opportunities were being missed. This included:

  • Reviewing historic campaigns, ad groups and keyword performance

  • Checking conversion tracking accuracy to ensure we were measuring what really mattered

  • Auditing performance data to pinpoint areas for improvement

From there, we developed a strategy focused on three key areas: expanding reach, improving relevance, and capturing valuable insights.

What we did

Keyword expansion
We identified high-intent, relevant search terms to drive more qualified traffic and ensure their ads were reaching the right people.

Ad copy refresh
We rewrote ads to better reflect their purpose and tone of voice, helping increase click-through rates and improve Quality Scores.

Smarter tracking setup
We implemented more accurate conversion tracking, including softer actions like key page views, to build a fuller picture of performance and help campaigns gain learnings more quickly.

Performance Max rollout
We launched a Performance Max campaign to increase visibility across Search, as well as dynamic search ads to capture long-tail queries.

Ongoing optimisation

With a strong foundation in place, we continued monitoring performance through regular check-ins. This helped us identify additional opportunities to scale, including expanded keyword targeting and dynamic ad testing.

We also ensured all campaigns remained compliant with Google’s strict Ad Grant policies to protect their account long-term.

The results

591% increase in Google Ad Grant spend

  • Average monthly spend of $4,567.85 vs $551

869% increase in impressions from ads

  • 66,573 vs 6,874

233% increase in traffic to the site

  • 2,184 vs 656

37% increase in click-through rate for Search campaigns

  • 22% vs 16%

Why it matters

By unlocking more of their Ad Grant budget, Medical Research Foundation is now reaching thousands more people who care about underfunded health conditions.

That means more awareness, more support, and ultimately, more momentum behind critical research that could change lives.

This is exactly the kind of impact we love to create, using digital tools for good, and helping purpose-driven organisations punch above their weight online.
